While we were in Pasadena, my hometown, my kids started whining about going to the beach. I wasn’t about to head to Galveston mid-day on Memorial Day, but I thought we could head over to nearby Sylvan Beach to cool off!

Sylvan Beach Park is not located on the coast, but a man-made beach in LaPorte on Galveston Bay. Back when I was growing up in Pasadena, it was just a place for kids to hangout, but today it’s been made over into a real park, with gravelly sand, restrooms, picnic tables and a fishing pier. Being on the bay, you won’t find waves unless it’s from a passing ship heading to the Houston Ship Channel.

On Memorial Day is was busy, barely a place to wiggle your toes in the sand, but it’s often much less crowded.
If you’re looking for a location close to Pasadena to just spend a day humming a little Otis Redding, than give Sylvan Beach a try.

Afterwards we headed across the Baytown bridge to Neal’s Sports Bar and Grill on the Water. The food was good and we had a nice breeze off the water.
