Sled the Sand Dunes at this Texas State Park

Sledding on the sand is so much fun, and so much better than snow sledding, since you don’t need to be wrapped up in coats and gloves! Monahans Sandhills State Park rents sleds, or you can bring your own for a great day sledding! Located near Odessa, the sandhills are beautiful, too!

Know Before You Go

Sand disc are rented at the park, or you can buy them there, or bring your own. We purchased one at Sand and Ski Sports in Fort Worth for $10, which we used during the 2021 Snowpocalypse, then took with us to Monahans and to White Sands National Park.

Located right off the highway, you can’t miss it!

The dry sand just brushes right off your skin and clothes, use baby powder to remove wet sand.

Don’t forget sunscreen and bug spray.

Take plenty of water!

If the dunes are too wet or too hot, the disc don’t slide as well.

We’ve visited in the Fall and Winter, when the sun was out and the temperatures were in the 50’s.  It was perfect, because the sand absorbs the heat so well.  We still needed sunscreen.

After hours of struggling up the hills in tennis shoes, and constantly dumping out the sand, we took off our shoes and it was much easier!  It’s another thing you can’t do during the summer!

Motorized Vehicles are not allowed on the dunes!

You don’t realize how BIG the sandhills are until you climb to the top of one of the biggest dunes, named Mt. Everest!

It’s fun for every age!  If you fall, it’s just soft sand!

You don’t HAVE to have a sand disc, the kids had fun just rolling down the dunes, too!

This is one of my favorite pictures ever, which I took of my friend Holley at the bottom of the sandhill! I still laugh out loud whenever I see it!

Sandboarding isn’t something new, it’s done around the world, and there is even an online magazine dedicated to the sport!  If your kids enjoy skateboarding or snowboarding, they even sell special sandboards!  Click HERE to visit their site, and a list of popular sanddunes in the US and abroad!

Day Use and Camping/RV Sites are right up on the dunes!  If you are planning to tent camp, it’s just like the beach, but without the sound of the waves.

Nature

Look for Shin Oaks, a small oak tree that only grows to about 4′, but has many acorns.
