Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill Has Reopened, and Even Offers A New Hiking Trail, and It’s All Still FREE!

Closed since Mid-March due to Covid, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center has reopened with new safety regulations, days and hours of operation and online reservations! To make returning to the beautiful center even more tempting, during their closure they completed a new 1-mile loop trail that extends their popular West Loop Trail! The trails are still perfect for kids, and still FREE, too! However, donations are requested to help keep this great resource open!

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center Hiking Trails, Cedar Hill

While the center, events and learning kiosk are closed, Dogwood Canyon has reopened on select days for limited capacity, reservation only hikes!

Hikers can choose from either the 1/2 mile, stroller-friendly Canyon Floor Trail, or the 1.5 mile West Loop trail, that takes you up almost 250 ft. to the top of the canyon for some incredible views of Joe Pool Lake. A moderate hike, the West Loop offers some nice ascends and descends, all the while in almost complete shade, perfect for even warm days!

During the months the Center was closed, they were busy completing the new, and currently unnamed, 1-mile Loop Trail that extends off the West Loop Trail. Visitors can still by-pass this new trail for a 1.5 mile hike, or include it in the hike for 2.5 miles! They are not offering guided hikes at this time.

Dogwood Canyon is located in Cedar Hill, just a few minutes from Cedar Hill State Park, Joe Pool Lake, and Cedar Ridge Preserve Hiking Trails. There are also many nearby restaurants and stores. I suggest a visit to Historic Downtown Cedar Hill after your hike, and load up on some carbs at Sam’s Pizza and Pasta, located at 601 Cedar Street, across from Babe’s Fried Chicken.

Know Before You Go:

Hiking Trails, parking and reservations are FREE.

Restrooms are currently closed.

Bring plenty of water.
