A Visit To The Oldest Bakery in Texas

On our last visit to New Braunfels, I was sitting outside in Downtown, enjoying one of the first cooler Fall mornings of the season, and sharing an apple strudel with my daughter when a mother deer came walking by with her older fawn. She momma deer navigated between the cars in line for their morning coffee, before disappearing behind Naegelin’s. It was what made waking up a little early on a Sunday and the ten minute walk from our hotel room at Schlitterbahn worth it. Mornings in New Braunfels are still a peaceful time, before the throngs of river goers get out of bed, and Naegelin’s, known as the oldest bakery in Texas, has earned it’s right to be as much a part of New Braunfels as the river itself.

Built in 1868 by Edouard Naegelin in 1868 following the Civil War, the little bakery has seen a lot in it’s 150 years, but as it celebrated it’s sesquicentennial in 2018, much has stayed the same.

Tourist, like myself, still come in for the fresh donuts, pastries and cookies, but locals know that the breads, that were once sold in a cart out front and delivered to homes in town, are the best. Their assortment is all baked fresh, and contains white, wheat, rye, sourdough, as well as fresh hamburger buns and cinnamon bread. We recently made the decision to grill some hamburgers (thankfully Schlitterbahn has grills) just for their jalapeno and cheese hamburger buns, and it’s probably going to be a new tradition for us!

You can’t go wrong with their apple strudel, so don’t pass it up. I’ve also learned from experience that the iced molasses cookies are a winner when left in the car after a day on the river. The hot car even keeps the icing warm.

Want Legendary Aunt Status? I started ordering these online and having them shipped at Christmas, keeping my ranking as World’s Best Not-Related Aunt!

We love this mural of New Braunfels, located in the parking lot of Naegelin’s!
