One of the most popular and iconic things to do in Texas during the summer is to visit Palo Duro Canyon’s epic outdoor musical, TEXAS! Performed with the canyon wall as a backdrop, it’s absolutely stunning!
The amphitheater is located inside the state park, but doesn’t require admission to the park. Seats are often hard to get, as sell out quickly, especially on weekends so make your reservations early!
Parking is FREE. Arrive early to enjoy a Chuck Wagon Dinner and a backstage tour before the show! Tours are 30 minutes long and are available from 6-7:30.
The Chuckwagon Dinner is served from 6-8pm, and is $14.95 for adults and $7.95 for children.
It’s a really big meal!
Outdoor, shaded dining areas are offered, but there is not any indoor seating. Dinner is provided by Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner, which also has a brick and mortar location in Canyon, if you want a sit down dinner. Click HERE to visit their website.
After dinner we did a little exploring around the canyon by the amphitheater!
My son found this cool millipede in the rocks.
There is also a gift shop and small stage where another band performs before the show begins at dusk.
Again, the amphitheater is just amazing! They let me sneak down to get this picture before the show began, but there is no photography during the show except in the big finale. The show begins with a horse and rider at the top of the canyon holding a flag, and no matter how many times I see the show, it still gets me!
Lights create beautiful effects on the canyon walls and on water features in the background!
It’s just incredible!
After the show, we got to meet many of the actors! Most of the performers are college students.
