There are so many amazing things to see in Galveston, even if you never visit the beach! One of the oldest towns in Texas, the island has amazing history, from when Jean Lafitte first landed on Galveston and erected his Campeachy and Maison Rouge in 1812, to the deadly hurricane of 1900! So many old homes have stories to tell on the island, and Bishop’s Palace is not to be missed!
Built in 1892, it is named one of the most architecturally significant homes in the country.
Audio Guided Tours are offered 7 days a week. Purchase your ticket online to save a little money. They also offer a Basement to Attic Tour on select days.
Considered architect Nicholas Clayton’s finest achievement, the home is enhanced with sculptures and carvings of mystical creatures, something my boys loved!
Not that we have ever experienced anything “supernatural” at the home, but it is believed to be haunted. The most frequent sighting are to be of Colonel Walter Gresham who built the home. It is said he can be seen on the front porch, especially before a storm. It is also said he doesn’t like having pictures taken of the house, which may be why it’s one of the most photographed places on the island! Visitors say they feel someone push them while trying to take a picture from the sidewalk. We were in Galveston for me to do a story on Haunted Galveston, so I took MANY pictures, and the only “shove” I received was from my playfully impatient husband who was ready for lunch!
