Goose Island State Park, Rockport

*** Please check TPWD page for information on closures at Goose Island SP due to damage caused by Hurricane Harvey ***

As the last stop on our week long coastal bend road trip, there was SO much I wanted to do in Rockport and at Goose Island State Park, but the lull of the sights and sounds of the bay actually had me wanted to just relax, which is exactly what we spent most of our time doing!  While the kids were exploring around the park’s big fishing pier, we just sat down, and started humming Otis Redding’s Sitting on the dock of the bay, because that just seemed like the thing to do.  There is plenty to do in Rockport and around the state park, such as fishing, hiking and nature watching in the nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge!

Know Before You Go

At the park, you’re only a few minutes from stores and restaurants in Rockport.

Lighted Fishing Pier

After purchasing all new poles, etc in Port Aransas, we were too tired during our stay at Goose Island State Park to stay up late and fish, and I REALLY regret it!  Fishing on the lighted pier is FREE with park admission, and since it’s in a state park, you don’t even need a fishing license!

The State Park even has loaner poles and tackle, just ask in the office!  For more information on the Tackle Loaner Program, click HERE. Large groups, such as scouts, should call ahead to reserve.

Camping

We were there to camp, and while they have camping on the beach, I really wanted to camp with a little privacy on the soft grass, under the big coastal oaks in the park!  There were plenty of deer all over the park, and it was a quiet weekend, even on a Friday night!

Big Tree

Speaking of those big coastal oak trees, few are any bigger than the Goose Island Big Tree!  Click HERE to read more about it!
