Glen Rose has some terrific attractions, such as Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dinosaur World and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center just to name a few, but one of the places not to be missed is absolutely FREE and lots of fun, Big Rocks Park!
Our family loves climbing on the huge boulders in the park, and then cooling off in the Paluxy River that runs through the park! The past few years the river has been dry during late summer, but it was terrific to see it running when we visited in September!
Know Before You Go
Wear shoes on the rocks, they get hot during the summer.
The rocks in the water are slippery, bring water shoes.
The restrooms at the park are only open during the summer, but Oakdale Park across the street has public restrooms.
The Big Rocks are the result of flood waters of the Paluxy River rising and falling, and cutting through the limestone. So, it’s not just a natural playground, it’s also a hands-on geology lesson for your kids!
There is plenty of parking at Big Rocks Park, and a trail that leads over to Paluxy Heritage Park, which makes a nice walk.
A dam was built on the Paluxy River just above Big Rocks Park to make a small lake, which is stocked each winter with rainbow trout. Below the dam, my kids enjoyed playing in the water and catching little minnows.
Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the tables, on the rocks or under the trees along the river!
