Yappy Hour at Lost Oak Winery, Burleson

Yappy Hour at Lost Oak Winery in Burleson

Is there anything better than puppies? Well, if you add wine and food, live music, and a beautiful Spring evening, it’s almost magical! Last night my daughter and I headed to Burleson to Lost Oak Winery for Yappy Hour! The Burleson Animal Shelter brought out pens of puppies available for adoption, and visitors to the winery were encouraged to bring out their own loveable dogs for an evening under the stars!

The Burleson Animal Shelter had the cutest puppies, and we really wanted to just love on them all! By the end of the evening, all the puppies had found new homes, too!

The Winery offers charcuterie boards to pair with their wines, and many times, like during Yappy Hours, they have food trucks. You can even bring your own picnic, but no outside alcohol.

A 2.25 mile hike and bike trail runs through the Lost Oak Winery property, and is maintained the Burleson Area Recreational Cyclist. The trail runs along Village Creek, the same Village Creek that runs up to Arlington and flows into Lake Arlington, and makes for a nice kayaking run from the Richland Chambers Pump Station to the lake. Water is pumped up from Richland Chambers Reservoir and Cedar Creek Lake, South of Dallas for Arlington’s drinking water. From Lake Arlington, Village Creek flows through the Village Creek Historical Area, where it merges with Rush Creek, and then to Waterchase Golf Course, where Cottonwood Creek merges with it just before it flows into the West Branch of the Trinity River, coming from Fort Worth.

The 2017 Wine Stomp

Late summer in Texas is Wine Season, when vineyards are busy harvesting their grapes, and people from all over come to experience a little of the fruits of their labors!  Each August and September, vineyards and wineries around the state offer tours, tastings and the very fun, Grape Stomp!  We headed to Burleson, south of Fort Worth, to stomp on some grapes at Lost Oak Winery, and had an incredible time!

Lost Oak Winery has 54 acres in Johnson County, and the grounds are beautiful!  They host many special occasions such as weddings and parties, too!

Lost Oak offers wine tastings, as well as concerts in the garden, cooking classes and wine pairings, car shows, family movie nights, a pumpkin patch in October and the Wicked Wine Run twice a year.

You can even call ahead to order a picnic basket, complete with wine, and take a stroll on the Lost Oak Hike and Bike Path, a 2-mile path through the vineyards, across Village Creek and through the woods to the picnic spot!  Bring your own bikes.

There were many different activities for the entire family at the Grape Stomp!  While I didn’t dress up, they had the cutest LUCY LOOK-ALIKE CONTEST, in homage to the Lucille Ball/I Love Lucy Show of the 1950’s!  I got to meet Janie and her sweet daughters, who were some of the winners!  I love how she got the girls involved, too!

As a winery, they produce the wine here, but their small vineyard isn’t large enough to grow all the grapes they need!  Most of their grapes come from the Texas High Plains, around Lubbock and Amarillo, a huge grape growing area!  Click HERE to read more about them!

Some people are still surprised to learn that Texas is the 6th largest wine-producing state in the U.S., but our vastly different growing regions produces many different types of grapes!

I was thrilled that we were able to pick some grapes right off the vine for the grape stomp!  This was my youngest son’s favorite part!  Did we taste them?  Absolutely, and they while they weren’t the big sweet grapes at the store, they were sweet!

It makes me wonder why we don’t have Pick Your Own Grape Vineyards?

CIMG1029.JPG

Picking your own grapes is fun!  We used pruning shears to cut the grapes off the vine.  The vines will live and produce grapes for 10 years, so you must be careful!

Everyone was having fun!  These lovely ladies were nice enough to pose for me, too!

Now we were ready to STOMP!!  We dumped our grapes into the tub!

CIMG1040.JPG

Oh, it’s messy!  It’s GREAT!!  My son loved it!

Some people had 2-3 friends in the same tub!

After 5-10 minutes of stomping, we stepped out and had our feet washed off!

While some wineries offer shirts, I love that Lost Oak has bags as a reminder of your stomp!  When you step out of the grape mash, you immediately step onto your bag!

Here’s a helpful hint, let some of the excess grape juice drip off your foot first, so you don’t get drops on it, and it keeps the footprint tight on the bag!
