Texas has some amazing caverns, but Wonder World Cave in San Marcos is a cave formed during an earthquake along the Balcones Faultline, and it’s very different from others you’ll visit in the state!

Wonder World will take you down 130 ft. into rooms created when the plates in the earth shifted and butted up against each other. The hills of the Texas Hill Country were created by this same conflict, along what is known as the Balcones Faultline.
Our cave guide explained that unlike caverns, where the speleothems cave formations are still “growing” by the mineral buildup as water trickles down from above, Wonder World was dry-formed by an earthquake, with no growing formations and as a result, you can touch the walls, something very different than caverns!

An Anti-Gravity House at Wonder World Park lets you take some fun Matrix-inspired pictures.
We also took the fun little train ride to a petting zoo to feed the animals, including deer, emus, a pig, turkeys and peacocks. You stay in the train and the animals come to you. The highlight was Henrietta, a very affectionate and friendly Emu, two words I never thought you could say about a giant dinosaur bird! She was very happy to allow me to pet her while she ate from my food bag, and just hung out afterwards with our guide, basically resting on her like a lap dog.
