After the cold days and nights and getting caught in a snowstorm in Northern Arizona and the Grand Canyon, it’s no surprise how nice it feels to be down in the desert at Surprise to watch the Texas Rangers during Spring Training! Typical for the Phoenix area in March, we had the best weather to cheer on our home team!
The Texas Rangers play at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, and it’s a great venue for watching Spring Training practice and games!
I love how laid back and fun Spring Training games are, very much like minor league baseball games. I do have a few tips, but mainly, if you can go, then go.

Know Before You Go
The early bird does get the worm, so it’s a good idea to purchase tickets in advance. However, it’s a smaller stadium and the cheaper seats are still really good. Of course, we didn’t have a winning season last year, and the ticket availability can change when the stats change.
Like many minor league stadiums, the outfield is grass. You can bring blankets and it’s a perfect place for younger kids to stretch out and play while you enjoy the game.
We were staying in Tempe at the Embassy Suites (which I love and recommend), which is about a 45-minute drive, a little longer in the evening on the way there. There are plenty of closer hotels.
Do bring a light jacket, as it does get much cooler in the evening.
The gates open 90 minutes before the game, but I really enjoy watching the practices during Spring Training. The Rangers and Royals have practice fields at Surprise Stadium, and it’s free to watch. Check the website for hours.
Parking is plentiful and free at Surprise Stadium!

Check the stadium website for Promotion Nights, such as fireworks and Sunday Funday Family 4-packs.
