Lajitas Stables 3 Day Horseback Trip in Big Bend

One of my Bucket List trips was a three-day horseback ride in Big Bend with Lajitas Stables! On horseback for 3 days, riding through the desert and mountains, I was obsessed with it! My friend Holley and her daughter and I planned a trip for late February, and along with my youngest we set out for what was sure to be a dream trip!

Monahans Sandhills State Park

It’s an 8-hour drive for us from DFW, plus a stop in Monahans Sandhills State Park to let the kids, who are both 13, play! Monahans is so much fun, even if you do get a little sandy!

Long Draw Pizza in Big Bend

We booked a room at the El Dorado in Terlingua for the night, and had dinner at one of the restaurants we love, Long Draw Pizza. The next morning we headed to the stables to start our trip!

At the stables, we had to sign our waivers and load up all our gear, which was a lot, to be driven out to the camp where we would stay at night. It was great because we packed a lot of stuff, not knowing what to pack. While much of the time we were in the Big Bend Ranch State Park, our camp was on private land near the park.

We then met our horses and saddled up for the ride! I was so excited! My horse was a sweet stinker named Libby. One of the important things to remember on these trail rides is let them know at the beginning that you are not going to let them eat, but Libby is, as I said, a stinker and she was determined to get herself a snack!

Riding up and down the mountains, you just have to put a lot of faith in your horse!

The scenery is absolutely beautiful! We saw some donkeys that had crossed the river and were warily watching us, a family of javelinas and so many amazing birds!

We stopped for lunch about half way through on our way to camp. Lunch and all meals are provided by the stables, and were delicious!

At camp, we had tents to stay in, or we could opt to spend the night on cots sleeping under the stars! It was so beautiful! The stables cook for you, too! We had a delicious dinner and breakfast the next morning!

The next morning the kids helped get their horses ready for a day of riding! They loved their horses so much!

I wasn’t feeling well, and had to leave camp on my second morning, as you can’t stay in camp by yourself with no phone service, and a truck came and picked me up, but my friend and the kids had an amazing time! I was so sad to leave, but my son was like, “Bye Mom”.
