The Stockyards Championship Rodeo is held in the Historic Cowtown Coliseum, which was built in 1908, and was the first indoor rodeo performance venue in the country! Located in the Fort Worth Stockyards, which was first started as a livestock market in 1866, when cowboys would drive their cattle to market on the famous cattle drives. The railroads, which came to the Stockyards in the late 1870s, made the Fort Worth stockyards an even more important part of the cattle industry! Today you can still the railroads, and there are even train rides offered during weekends.

My husband might disagree, but half the fun of the rodeo is getting dressed up for it! Boots, jeans and a cowboy hat might be all you need!

Seating is first come, so arrive early. They are seating with social distancing in mind. Events take place at both ends of the arena, making the BEST seats as close to the middle as possible!

A real rodeo, it’s very exciting!

CIMG0845

The rodeo clowns were hilarious, and they even used a giant slingshot to throw a few t-shirts to the audience!

CIMG0859

Concession style food is available during the rodeo, too.

ALL the children, age 8 -12, were invited to come down for the calf scramble!  A calf is released into the arena with the kids, and the first to grab the tape off it’s back wins!

The horses are really just amazing!

Children ages 7 and under are also invited to come down for the Mutton Scramble!  Similar to the Calf Scramble, the children chase a grown sheep in the arena and the winner is the first to grab the ribbon!

When our youngest was five, he grabbed the sheep and it pulled him all over the arena, but someone else grabbed the ribbon first! Of course, he was most upset because he thought he was actually going to get to keep the sheep. I think he had already named it!

During one of the breaks, a group of women from the audience were invited to come down for a contest, although they weren’t told what kind of contest.  The women invited down were all visiting from Australia, and a little shocked to find out once they were in the arena that it was a dance contest! I won’t give it away, but it was a bit of a gag, and I laughed so hard!  It was hilarious!

The event I was excited to see was the barrel racing!  We cheered so loudly that my throat hurt!

CIMG0891

The racing was followed by MORE bull riding!  We LOVED every minute of it!!  It was so exciting when a rider actually went 8 minutes!

The Rodeo Store at the entrance to the Coliseum sells toys, cowboy hats and other souvenirs.

My Mommy Tips:

  • If they want to do either of the scrambles, dress them in clothes they can RUN in!
  • Bring antibacterial wipes to clean their hands after the scramble.
  • Outside food and drinks are not allowed.
  • I took a sweater but the temperature was very comfortable during the show.
