Maxine’s Cafe, Bastrop

From Corn Mazes and Fall Festivals to Haunted Houses, hiking and playing in the Colorado River, we had an incredible weekend in Bastrop seeing all the town East of Austin has to offer during the fall!  Of course, no weekend is complete without eating, and Main Street in Bastrop has plenty of delicious options!

Overlooking the Colorado River, Main Street Bastrop offers terrific shopping and dining in Central Texas!  After a full weekend of “horrors” at some of the areas fun Halloween attractions, we were ready to eat, and Maxine’s Cafe is one of our favorites!

We arrived early Sunday morning, after a hike at Bastrop State Park, and we beat most of the crowds.  I named this our “Scary Bastrop Weekend”, but thankfully the lines at Maxine’s weren’t all that frightening, and they make waiting easy with a self-service coffee stand and plenty of seating!

The cafe has a terrific, down-home charm that you expect to find on small town Main Street!

I don’t know about you, but drinking out of anything but a mason jar just wouldn’t be right in a place like Maxine’s!

We ordered the chicken fried steak, hand-battered there, of course, with home fries and a scrambled egg.

My son had the chicken and waffles, and his chicken was incredible!  My other kids and husband all split the Texas Monthly Stacker, “featured on the December 2011 cover of Texas Monthly,”  it’s a stack of 12 Griddle cakes served with a quarter pound pile of bacon!  As a family, we all share a little of our food, anyway!

After breakfast, we did a little window shopping along Main Street, before heading down to the “Riverwalk”, and to the river!  You’ll find more shops along the river, and Bastrop River Company offers canoe and tubing rentals on the river!
