Possum Kingdom State Park, Graham

Possum Kingdom Lake is known for it’s huge cliffs, which even lure the Red Bull International Cliff Diving Competition to the heights of Hell’s Gate on the lake!  However, cliffs make for tricky camping, and little access for non-adventure seekers to reach the water, which is why Possum Kingdom State Park is located at an area with shallow, rocky shores!  The cool blue waters are perfect for a day on the lake, and beckon to campers, boaters and fun seekers each year to come play!

In addition to water sports, there are also hiking trails!  The Longhorn Trail and the Chapparal Ridge Trail are both short hikes with steep inclines but offer beautiful views of the lake!

The Park Store sells a great selection of items, and that’s great because you are a long way from the closest Walmart!  Be sure and double check and pack everything you will need for a great weekend at the lake!

The park offers canoe rentals, also.  Stay in the coves are windy days, as it’s hard to paddle back across the lake!

One of our favorite campsites on the lake, with great access to the water, where we could leave our boat overnight.  Shade is a costly commodity at Possum Kingdom, and you’ll likely give up a water sight to have both.

During a previous camping trip, we arrived at the park after midnight on the 4th of July, and with fireworks still going off over our head, realized we forgot to bring the tent poles.  Exhausted and not ready to make the long drive to the closest 24 hours Walmart to find something to sleep in, we left our tent on the ground as a tarp, and blew up our air mattresses and quickly went to sleep. It was one of our favorite Summer Camping Trips, with the amazing breeze blowing in cool off the water, we slept like babies!  In fact, rarely during the summer will we put up a tent anymore, opting to sleep outside in a hammock or air mattress!  We have evolved into using a shade for a little privacy.

Boat Rentals

If you’re wanting something faster than a canoe, check out renting a boat for the day or weekend!  Click HERE to visit the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce website for list of boat rental companies on the lake.

The PK Hike and Bike Trail

A 16-mile Possum Kindom Hike and Bike Trail on the park’s East End is a steep grade trail.
