10 Incredible Spring Break Destinations in Texas

Spring Break is coming, and it’s time to make plans for the best one ever!  Here’s 10 of our favorite Spring Break Destinations, from hikes in West Texas to never ending concerts by the beach, there is something for everyone during Spring Break in Texas!

1. Galveston The beach resort town of Galveston combines history and fun with so much to do during Spring Break!  Thrill with the rides at the Pleasure Pier that extends over the beach, ride the Galveston Duck Tours into Galveston Bay! Moody Gardens offers 3 unique pyramids, with an aquarium, rainforest and their Discovery Pyramid! They also have a boat tour of Galveston Bay and a waterpark! You’ll love the coastal shopping on the Historic Strand, watch for dolphins on a tour of Galveston Bay.  Take advantage of the unique curve of the island to watch the sun rise on East Beach and set on West Beach.

2. Houston

Spring Break conveniently falls during on of the biggest events of the year, Rodeo Houston! Grab your cowboy hat and hit the midway for fun games, rides, and so much more! Explore Downtown Houston with kayaking tours at Discovery Green, take a tour of the home of the Houston Astros, Minutemaid Stadium and walk or bike the trails around Buffalo Bayou!  Levy Park will have all their amazing activities, including Children’s Bingo! Don’t miss watching the bats emerge from the Waugh Ave Bridge each evening and your children with delight with discoveries in the Museum District! Kids will love the activities and hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Houston! The Houston Museum of Natural Science offers so many amazing exhibits, including their Special Exhibit, Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs. The Health Museum and Houston Zoo are also located around Hermann Park!

3.  South Padre Island

South Padre Island is known for their wild Spring Break Party and concert series, which seems to go for days on end, and if that’s what you are looking for then there is no better place to spend Spring Break!  The island still host plenty of other activities as well, such as horseback riding on the beach, ziplining, shelling and offshore fishing excursions! Be sure and head over to see Space X on Boca Chica Beach, too, which doesn’t offer tours but you can get very close to watch them work on the rockets!

4. Kemah/Clear Lake Area

South of Houston, Kemah, Clear Lake and the Galveston Bay area boast such great entertainment venues as Space Center Houston, the Kemah Boardwalk, Armand Bayou, the Aquarium Restaurant and much more!  We love the Clear Lake Hilton overlooking the water!  Kemah is the perfect place to get out on the water, with options like fishing charters, the Boardwalk Beast for a fun ride or rent kayaks and take out for your own adventure!  Great food is waiting for you, too, like the Flying Dutchman, Tookies, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack and more!

5. Big Bend National Park

Spring is the rainy season in most of the state, but in West Texas you are usually met with beautiful cool, dry days and incredible wildflowers!  The Big Bend Region is vast, and I recommend trying to narrow it down when visiting!  Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park offer incredible hiking, camping, horseback riding, ATV tours, river rafting and so much more!  The Lajitas Resort offers golfing and zip lines across the canyon, and the ghost town of Terlingua is a must on any bucket list!

6. El Paso

One of our favorite Spring Break Destinations is El Paso and Carlsbad, N.M.!  Tour Carlsbad Caverns and explore the town of Carlsbad, then spend a day or hiking all the incredible hikes at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, including McKittrick Canyon and the climb to the top of Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas!  Take a guided tour through Hueco Tanks State Park to see the prehistoric rock art, or do some bouldering at this world class site!  Franklin Mountains State Park offers incredible hikes in the park, like the old Copper Mine Tour!  Walk or take a bus across the border into Juarez for a day of shopping in the old market!  With El Paso as a base, it’s a 2 hour drive to Ruidoso and Ski Apache!

7.  Texas Hill Country

The water is always just right in the Texas Hill Country!  Deep springs keep the rivers about 70 degrees year round, and it feels close to perfect on a sunny Spring Day!  Garner State Park on the Frio River offers camping and cabins, and Spring is the perfect time for a hike up to the summit of Old Baldy!  Take a ride to Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of Texas, or stroll through the streets of Fredericksburg!  The town of Llano celebrates their annual LEAF festival each year with the incredible rock stacking competitions in the Llano River.

8. Marfa and Fort Davis

Spend Spring Break in a teepee or old travel bus at this fun bohemian resort in the Chihuahuan Desert!  After dark, head to watch the mysterious Marfa Lights.  Go horseback riding on the historic Prude Ranch and tour Fort Davis National Park.  The Davis Mountains State Park offers hiking up the skyline trail, and learn more about deepest space at the McDonald Observatory.  Cool off  with a swim at Balmorhea Springs, the largest spring-fed swimming pool in the world!  Amtrak’s Texas Eagle is a fun way to see the Texas desert, with daily trains leaving from Dallas and Austin.

9. San Antonio

If the dying of the San Antonio River green during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade isn’t enough reason to visit San Antonio for Spring Break, then check out all the excitement at SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas!  The San Antonio Zoo, Witte Museum and Do Seum have Spring Break special activities, and it’s the perfect time of year to take your bikes for a riding tour along the San Antonio Riverwalk to the 4 Missions.

10. Port Aransas

This great little beach town sits on Mustang Island, and offers fun both on the beach and in town! You’ll find great restaurants, fishing excursions, dolphin tours, and miles of beach! There’s even more to do just across the ferry in Corpus Christi, and tour the U.S.S. Lexington or the Texas State Aquarium! The world’s largest undeveloped barrier island, North Padre Island gives you miles of beach or head to Lagune Madre and take windsurfing lessons!
