We spent a fun and adventurous week in Albuquerque, New Mexico and had such a great time in this city at the base of the Sandia Mountains. It was the longest we had ever been in Albuquerque, and had such a fun time exploring the city and learning a little about it’s history!
We stayed in and spent a huge part of our time in Old Town Albuquerque, and just fell in love with the cute and historic district, dating back to the founding of the city in 1706! Situated on the East side of the Rio Grande, Old Town boast many cute shops and restaurants, as well as a historic church, square and several museums.
Completed in 1793. the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church stands as the anchor of Old Town, and is still in use today! The Pueblo-Spanish style adobe walls are characteristic of most of Old Town!
Take a few minutes to find the Cottonwood Madonna while you’re walking around Old Town, a carving of the Madonna in the tree!
We enjoyed reading a little about the history of Old Town while we walked around!
We were told that in the evenings on weekends there were often Flamenco dancers in the square, and that during Christmas the square is lit up with luminaries!
One of our favorite stops in Old Town was to the Church Street Cafe! We loved the Navajo Tacos , freshly made Indian Fry Bread piled high with beans, ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes and Christmas sauce (green and red)! It was so delicious! The building was is considered one of the oldest in Old Town, built around 1706.
The Candy Lady was a fun stop, and while all her candy is dipped on site, she also had some Breaking Bad rock candy sold in little bag! I have to admit to never watching the show, Breaking Bad, but being in Albuquerque, with so many references to it, kinda made me a little curious! It seemed everywhere we went someone was telling me something about it that pertained to the show, which was filmed in Albuquerque, or the actors, who frequented many of the restaurants!
There were so many cute little shops in Old Town, and we definitely went home with plenty of cute souvenirs!
We stayed at the Best Western Plus in Old Town, which we absolutely loved and had a great little shuttle to take us to Old Town, which was in walking distance, but proved useful during a Summer Storm. We had several quick and unexpected Summer Storms during our stay, so I’d definitely recommend bringing an umbrella, and always being prepared.
There were also some other neat hotels with a little more history, like the Hotel Albuquerque and Hotel Chaco, that I would have loved to have explored, as well as a few B&Bs. We were very last minute on our trip to Albuquerque and traveling with a group, so we needed several rooms, but I would love to go back and stay at some of the others, too.
If you choose Best Western Old Town, download their free app and become a Best Western Member if you aren’t already for extra savings. We were given daily breakfast vouchers which could be used for breakfast in their restaurant, or applied towards other meals during the day or in the bar!
The Albuquerque Museum in Old Town offers guided tours of Old Town, and their Sculpture Garden as well as fun activities.
We found so many cute shops in Old Town!
Poco Apoco is another of the cute shopping village in Old Town.
Everyone suggested we visit the Rattlesnake Museum, and we were on our way to visit it when we were detoured to meet up with some friends, but we heard it was really a must-do in Old Town! Admission was $6 for adults and $4 for children.
More Things To Do in Albuquerque
Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway Ride up to the top of the Sandia Mountains on the tram for a casual lunch or a more upscale dinner at Ten3. Reservations required for dinner. You can hike up the mountain, 1.5 miles and take a break at the top, too!
The Isotopes Baseball Fans of the Simpson will love this minor league team
The Petroglyphs National Monument has the country’s largest site, with hiking trails and remains of cinder cone volcanoes.
ABQ Biopark is a zoo, aquarium and botanical garden, with something for everyone!
Drive the Turquoise Trail The scenic drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe takes you past such cute towns as Madrid and old turquoise mines. While in Santa Fe, don’t miss the immersive art exhibit, Meow Wolf!
