It may be February, but that isn’t going to keep us off the water. After all, this is Texas, and the weather can fluctuate from 30 degrees to 80 degrees, or more, in a single week! We were in Bastrop for the weekend, celebrating my son’s 18th birthday, and spent a fun day paddling the Colorado River, which cuts right through town!
Located right Downtown, the Bastrop River Company offers kayak, canoe, SUP paddleboard and even tube trips up and down the river!
Morgan was awesome about meeting us in the morning, and getting everyone set up!
Love the shirts, which say, “Just downriver from Weird”, referring to Austin!
They provide everything, including life jackets.
The river in winter is pretty slow, unless there has recently been a rain. During spring and summer, you’ll have a better flow for longer trips!
My boys loved the river! While water depth in a river can vary drastically up and down the river, it was only about 4′ here.
Islands along the river are the perfect place to stop and stretch your legs, and there were several little places where the current picked up for small, fun little rapids!
Other fun stops downriver of Bastrop are the Colorado River Refuge, with cliffs along the river, and the 6.8 mile Lost Pines Nature Trail, which has river access.
My daughter insisted on a paddleboard, even when we warned her how chilly the water was! She loves paddleboarding, and rarely falls, anyway. However, after an hour of the warm sunshine on her, she was jumping in to cool off!
It’s Bastrop River Company for the win!
BRC offer hour rentals, 1/2 day, full day and even 3,4 and 5 day trips on the river. Numerous islands along the river are perfect for stopping and camping overnight!

While the kids played down in the water, my husband and I retreated up to one of the fun restaurants along the river, Neighbor’s Kitchen and Yard, which offers a HUGE covered patio overlooking the river, and tasty food and bloody marys. All of which makes for a pretty perfect February afternoon!
