Each January 1st, Texas Parks and Wildlife host First Day Hikes at many of their State Parks, and we chose the hike at McKinney Falls State Park this year, because it’s such a beautiful park and so close to Downtown Austin, where we were also participating in the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge at Barton Springs Pool! As happens in Texas, the weather was a mild 68 degrees, about the same as the water temperatures, and actually a nice day for a swim!
McKinney Falls State Park is loved not only for their excellent hike and bike trails, but also their incredible falls on Onion Creek! It’s a wonderful place to spend the day or weekend, with tent/RV camping sites and cabins!
Know Before You Go
Located just minutes from Congress Ave., McKinney Falls is usually very busy. Make camping reservations in advance.
Onion Falls Hike and Bike Trail
At just under 3 miles, the hard surface trail along Onion Creek is a fun way to see the park!
The Upper Falls
Accessible off the Onion Creek Trail, the limestone overhang makes a terrific place to lay out on a warm day, relax to the sound of the falls, or explore!
On a warm day, the swimming hole would be full of people, but on January 1st it was only my daughter swimming in the cool waters!
The Lower Falls
Swim, relax, read or just wander about the Lower Falls!
Natural holes in the rock allow water to rush through, making dramatic falls like this!
Things To Do in Austin
Take a FREE tour of the Texas State Capitol! Pack a lunch for a picnic on the beautiful State Capitol grounds!
Another of our favorite places to hike or bike in Texas, the Ladybird Lake Hike and Bike Trail runs a 10-mile loop around the lake!
Barton Springs Pool is a summer must-do! The spring-fed swimming pool, part of Barton Springs, is a constant 68-72 degrees, and a part of Austin life since the 1920’s.
After a day hiking, it’s nice to have a go-to place to eat with great food! My kids love Home Slice Pizza on South Congress, and I love everything about South Congress! Click HERE to visit their website.
